My paintings are a response to my experience of life, and therefore include a broad subject matter. Through studying fine art at Leeds Polytechnic my paintings are figurative and are supported by my lifelong love of drawing. Whilst at college I spent many hours in the life room learning how to translate what I saw onto paper, striving to create that three dimensional image onto a two dimensional surface. I soon became aware that I was in fact describing how light fell upon a surface and this led to early explorations with painting.

 

A Painters Diary.

I paint and draw as much as I can from life and use a restrained palette to communicate my ideas to the observer, working usually in watercolour outside and oil paints in the studio. Painting light means that I can move between subject matter, the subject being almost secondary to the description of light and colour. In painting I feel less usual means more.
Looking at my work I feel they are a visual diary: my family, wildlife, and places I have visited. More than that though they are something my children can hold and say on a certain date this is what dad was thinking, this is what his eyes saw!
